A Special Fasting and Purification Retreat
Day passes are available.
Buddha's Enlightenment Day is a particularly auspicious occasion to engage in spiritual practice, offering us a precious opportunity to purify negativity, accumulate merit and deepen our experience of love and compassion.
Nyungnay is a special fasting and purification practice associated with Thousand-Armed Avalokiteshvara, the Buddha of Compassion. Based on the sadhana Drop of Essential Nectar, this beautiful practice combines prayers, prostrations, mantra recitation and meditation with the observance of the Eight Mahayana Precepts.
Through engaging sincerely in this powerful practice, we can purify negative karma of body, speech and mind, pacify delusions and create the causes for lasting peace and happiness. At the same time, we receive the blessings of Buddha Avalokiteshvara, helping us to develop a more loving and compassionate heart.
Nyungnay is also a special method for deepening our experience of bodhichitta — the supreme good heart that wishes to attain enlightenment for the benefit of all living beings. By combining purification with the practice of compassion, we gradually transform our mind and strengthen our ability to benefit others.
Held in the peaceful surroundings of Tara International Kadampa Retreat Centre, this retreat offers a meaningful opportunity to step away from the distractions of daily life and engage wholeheartedly in a profound and blessed spiritual practice.
Everyone wishing to deepen their experience of purification, compassion and Buddhist practice is warmly welcome.
About the Practice
Nyungnay is traditionally practised over two days and involves taking the Eight Mahayana Precepts, which include fasting and observing moral discipline.
The practice includes three sessions each day, following the prayers and meditations in Drop of Essential Nectar.
Participants should familiarise themselves with the fasting requirements before attending, as the second day traditionally involves abstaining from both food and drink.
