Make Your own Mala | Sunday 29th March | 10am-1pm

      Half-Day Course
with Ling Brandwood

Ever wondered what mantras are, and how to make your own mala (prayer beads)? Join us for a peaceful and inspiring morning, where we combine meaningful teachings with the traditional art of creating your own 108-bead mala to take home.

We begin with a short talk by Kadampa teacher Ling, who will explain the meaning and purpose of mantras, and how to use a Buddhist mala in conjunction with mantra recitation to develop greater peace of mind, compassion, and wisdom. This will be followed by a practical, hands-on workshop where you will be guided step by step in making your own mala. Once everyone has completed their mala, you will receive a mantra to recite, along with guidance on how to use and bless your mala in your daily practice.

Creating your own mala can be a very joyful and meditative experience, allowing you to craft an object that you can use in your daily practice for many years to come.

Please remember to bring some tools with you. All the mala kits are now sold out online, but we will have a small number available to purchase on the day for anyone who still needs one.

Essential Tools

  • Beads of your choice (typically 6mm or 8mm — about 110 beads)

  • Stringing material (we suggest satin nylon cord — please ensure it fits the bead hole)

  • A pair of tweezers

  • A lighter

  • A pair of scissors

Optional Tools (Highly Recommended)

  • A bead design board or bead mat — to prevent beads from rolling away while you work

  • A guru bead (3-hole) — to give your mala a traditional and elegant finish

  • You may also wish to include four contrasting beads to use as markers at the 7th and 21st bead
